Below, you can read about progress we have made in our grantmaking and pledges we have joined with other funders, governments, and organizations that share our values to fund Indigenous Peoples around the world. The Christensen Fund will regularly update its activities on these pledges. We look forward to continued engagement to ensure best practices in this important work.
In November 2021, the UK, Norway, Germany, the US, and the Netherlands, in partnership with The Christensen Fund and 16 other funders pledged to invest $1.7 billion to help Indigenous Peoples and local communities at COP26, citing their proven role in preventing deforestation that fuels climate change. To honor the self determination and the rights of Indigenous Peoples as affirmed by the UNDRIP, The Christensen Fund is providing direct support to organizations and community partners whose work and ways of life sustain and protect tropical forests. In partnership with Native Americans in Philanthropy and Biodiversity Funders Group, we joined 14 other leading funders in March 2023 to commit over $100 million over the next five years to support Tribal-led biodiversity restoration and conservation.
In response to the historic underinvestment in Black, Indigenous, and people of color-led environmental justice groups, The Christensen Fund joined top funders in the U.S. in committing to transparent grant reporting and increasing funding of BIPOC-led power building groups to at least 30% within two years.
